E-Prescribe with SequelMed – Increase your Revenue

January 01, 2009

E-Prescribe: Increase Your Medicare Reimbursements by 2%
According to a report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), more than 1.5 million Americans are injured every year by medication errors. In the same report, the IOM recommended that all prescriptions be written and received electronically by the year 2010. Congress passed the “Medicare Improvements for Patients & Providers Act of 2008” earlier this year and CMS adopted the “Standards for e-Prescribing under Medicare Part D” and the “Medicare Prescription Drug Program” on April 7, 2008. As such, doctors who prescribe Medicare Part D drugs electronically next year will be rewarded with additional pay. However, those incentives eventually will run out, and penalties will begin for physicians who continue to write paper prescriptions.

What is E-Prescription?
Medicare Part D prescription drug program defines e-prescribing as “the transmission, using electronic media, of prescription and prescription-related information between a prescriber, dispenser, pharmacy benefit manager, or health plan, either directly or through an intermediary, including and e-prescribing network. E-Prescribing includes, but is not limited to, two-way transmissions between the point of care and the dispenser. ”

Why Should I E-Prescribe?
According to a guide published by the eHealth Initiative Foundation in collaboration with AMA, AAFP, ACOP, MGMA and CIMM, e-prescribing can improve patient safety, medication compliance, prescribing accuracy and efficiency and reduce health care costs through averted adverse drug events and substitution of less expensive drug alternative. The same guide also reported that recent research by the American Medical Association found that, due to these benefits, physicians who use an e-prescribing system are significantly more satisfied with their prescribing process than physicians who continue to handwrite prescriptions. Collectively, these enhancements will lead to a higher quality health care system that will benefit everyone.
Improving patient safety and quality of care
Reducing time spent on phone calls and call-backs to pharmacies
Reducing time spent faxing prescriptions to pharmacies
Automating the prescription renewal request and authorization process
Increasing patient conveniences and medication compliance
Improving formulary adherence permits lower cost drug substitutions
Allowing greater prescriber mobility
Improving drug surveillance and recall ability
